After Dark for DOS is normally placed onto a computer using an "installer".
During this install the software adds four lines to your Autoexec.bat file.

This version of After Dark has been pre-installed for you (without
personalization), in the default directory "ADDOS". The four lines that
After Dark adds to Autoexec.bat have been extracted and placed into a
separate batch file labeled "ADSTART.BAT". If you change the After Dark
working directory, you also need to change the paths in ADSTART.BAT.

----------
ADSTART.BAT breakdown:

The first line installs a TSR called "AD_WRAP". This program is only
required to be loaded if you intend to use the advanced feature of requiring
a password to exit the screen saver. Unlike with other DOS lockdown
programs, After Darks security measure is easy to bypass, so it is better
not to use the password feature (and thus not load an extra TSR).

The second line is an environment setting, that appends the After Dark
directory to the end of your Path (;C:\ADDOS). Note that the semicolon
should be removed in the rare case of nothing being in your Path prior.

The third line is another environment setting, which tells After Dark the
directory in which its files reside (ADPATH=C:\ADDOS).

The fourth line installs a TSR called "ADTSR". This program is a watchdog
that monitors mouse movements (if applicable) and keystrokes. After a
configurable delay of non-activity (5 minutes minimum, set within ADPANEL),
it launches "ADRUN" (no, substituting this file with some other renamed file
usually doesn't work, because the display goes to a different video page).
This TSR should be the last (or nearly last) TSR loaded, so that it can
monitor activity. The TSR can be unloaded with the command "ADTSR/U".

Note: ADRUN is the actual program that displays the images on your screen.
It can be launched directly from the command line. This means that you can
launch After Dark manually, or from a batch file, whenever you want to be
entertained (pressing a key or moving the mouse simply ends the program).

TIP:
You can add your own logo screensaver images into the PCXFILES directory.
