The most powerful of the searches available with Collins Electronic is the X
definition search. The definition search will search every definition to find X
entries that contain selected keywords according to criteria established X
using special search commands.                                                X
                                                                              X
AND narrows a search by retrieving only those entries that have both keywords X
in their definitions. X
Example: painter AND French X
This search pattern would find every entry that contains both the word painterX
and the word French. X
                                                                              X

the second word in their definitions. X
Example: painter OR French X
This search pattern would find every entry that contains the word painter and X
every entry that contains the word French. X
                                                                              X
NOT narrows a search by retrieving only those entries that have the first X
keyword in their definitions but not the second. X
Example: painter NOT French X
This search pattern would find every entry that contains the word painter but X
does not contain the word French. X
                                                                              X
( ) determines the order or priority of the search. Collins Electronic X

Example: (painter OR sculptor) NOT French X
This search pattern would find every entry that contains the word painter as X
long as that definition does not contain the word French and every definition X
that contains the word sculptor as long as that definition does not contain X
the word French. X
                                                                              X

1. Type a keyword in the text entry box. X
2. Type the search command in capital letters. X
                                                                              X
4.2 WILDCARD X
Collins Electronic enables words to be searched for, although not all their X
letters are specified. This is done by performing a wildcard search. Wildcard X
searches use special tokens (wildcards) to stand for letters that have been X
left out of a word. There are two types of wildcard: X
                                                                              X
The question mark (?) wildcard represents one letter. The question mark is X
used when the exact number of letters that are missing from a search pattern X
is known. X
Example: to? finds all three letter words that start with to. X
                                                                              X
The asterisk (*) wildcard represents from any number of characters. The X
asterisk is used for generating a broad range of words that have the letters X
in the search pattern in common, without limiting the search to a specific X
number of letters. X
Example: bob* generates a list of all words that start with bob. X
                                                                              X
4.3 ANAGRAM X
Collins Electronic can search for words that are anagrams of other words or X
group of letters. The anagram search finds any headword or derived word that X
can be made up from the letters in the entered text. X
                                                                              X
