Scarmond was second only to Dunalin in the former Kingdom of
Carlavon. It was almost entirely destroyed by the Latacians
during the terrible year of 258, the legend being that one of
the city's own guards was bribed to open the gates for the
invading Latacian army. Scarmond finally freed itself in 331,
killing its Latacian governor, and with the help of Malus
Kob, defeating the remaining garrison. Unfortunately, the
freedom was exceptionally short-lived, as Kob declared himself
ruler of the city (in the name of Kain) and appointed his own
governor. There was a brief resistance, but it was soon
crushed, and so Scarmond became a province of the Duchy of
Thunderheim in the Kingdom of Kain.

Then, in 368, the city was inexplicably granted independence,
the forces of Thunderheim shifting to a more defensive posture
along the Kain-Taran border. Seeing the move as a sign of
weakness, Latacia attacked, and now a new military governor
named Aurelius rules Scarmond, though resistance to the Empire
in the surrounding countryside is quite high.
