Portown is probably the oldest of the cities in the region.
Originally founded by the Sidurhi to extend their trade routes
beyond the Divlanti Sea, it was eventually cut off by intensive
pirate activity and sank into squalor. It is said that for more
than a decade, the inhabitants even resorted to cannibalism
(mainly of captured pirates), and that thieves would avoid the
city, as there was nothing to steal. The Latacians finally put
an end to the area's pirate problems, but also brought with them
a series of military governors who, as far as the commoners
were concerned, were essentially bandit lords.

Portown continued to grow under Latacian rule, however, and,
like Kain, broke free in 329 during the Latacian civil war.
King George put a naval blockade on Portown in an attempt to
conquer it for himself, however, soon rescinded his efforts
and made peace with Portown, hence earning the title "Good
King George".

Portown now enjoys its status as a free city, and it's population
has perhaps the highest standard of living anywhere in the region.
Magic is not uncommon in Portown. In fact, the city is ruled by
a council of mages who are, in turn, supported by the local
merchants. Portown also has a substantial military defenses,
and recruits soldiers from more than a dozen nearby farming
villages which reside close enough to the city to be considered
suburbs.
