Starmap subdivides space into regions known as quadrants which, the
program assumes, are ten light-years on a side. These quadrants
contain smaller regions known as sectors which are each one light-
year on a side. Hence, each quadrant encompasses 1000 sectors (or
1000 cubic light years). Once you enter the starmap, you will
notice the small dark blue squares, each representing one sector,
as well as the large bright blue squares delineating quadrants. You
can use the arrow keys to move forward, backward, or to either
side. Notice how the map adjusts around you every time you move.
You are not so much moving around the map as the map is moving
around you.

At this point you are only modifying your X and Y coordinates. In
order to modify your Z coordinate, to go up and down, use the Page-
Up and Page-Down keys. This time the map doesn't seem to move, but,
in fact, it does. You should notice the color of each starsystem
changing as well as its Z-relationship which is displayed alongside
the starsystem.

The Z-relationship is simply a relationship between your current Z-
coordinate and the Z-coordinate of the starsystem you are looking
at. For example, if a starsystem is three light years above you,
it's Z-relationship will be +3. Likewise, if it is two below, it
will be -2.

You have to move up or down using the Page-Up and Page-Down in
order to get a given starsystem's Z-relationship to 0 before you'll
be on the same X-Y plane as that starsystem. Once you are there,
however, you can hit <enter> to view whatever attachment is present
(or use the ">" key to create an attachment if one doesn't exist).
